Background
While cruising along in my mint early ’86 MKII Supra,
I spotted this black ’92 Supra turbo at a car lot.
I stopped to take a look and was amazed by its condition
inside and out. The black/shadow grey interior was perfect
and so was its black exterior paint. This car was completely
STOCK! I took it for a test drive and thought it drove perfectly.
Next thing I know, it was in my garage, jacked up for further
scrutinizing. After finding that everything under the car
looked very clean and undamaged, I immediately drove it
back to the car lot and started going through the process
of trading in my ’86. Although I was a little hesitant
to get rid of it, I thought I will get more fun and excitement
from its new replacement. Little did I know that it would
turn into what it is now!
Turbo
Got tired of the stock CT26 and went with a TO4E. A little
while after that, I got power hungry and decided to go with
a bigger ITS dual ballbearing GT76. Q trim. .84 AR.
Bottom
End
The bottom end on the 7MGTE has a stock crank that has been
semi knife-edged, balanced with Cunningham rods, coated
JE pistons, and Toyota bearings.
Head
The cylinder head is completely stock. A 2MM HKS metal headgasket
and ARP head studs torqued to 90 lb-ft keep it sealed to
the block.
Intake
I decided to make my own custom plenum that simplifies intake
air routing. I use a Tial BOV to protect the turbo from
compressor surge. The intercooler consists of the largest
Spearco core that will fit and custom end tanks. The aluminum
intake pipes from the turbo to the throttle body are also
custom made.
Exhaust
"ONE OF A KIND" best describes the TIG welded
all 321 stainless header. Runners are 1.625” in diameter
and have .065” wall thickness. It uses two Burnsstainless
3 into 1 collectors. A Tial 46mm wastegate is used to help
control the boost and a custom 3.5 inch downpipe, full
stainless steel exhaust with Burnsstainless lightweight
race muffler with custom Inconel tip complete the exhaust
system of the Supra.
Fuel
Fuel is delivered by an SX external pump and controlling
its pressure is an SX regulator. The fuel lines are custom
made 1/2 inch stainless hard lines and stainless steel braided
teflon lines. A stock fuel rail with custom fittings is
fitted with a set of Bosch 800cc injectors.
Drivetrain
Transferring the power to the wheels is a stock R154.
The lightweight JUN chromoly flywheel was modified to work
with a Tilton Triple Carbon plate clutch. The combination
of these two parts weighs only 12 pounds! The driveshaft
is now one piece which is lighter than the stock two piece
design. A Torsen LSD and a MoTeC Traction Control system
make sure the tires are put to good use.
Suspension
For quick turns or just playing around town, the car is
fitted with a set of HKS coilovers, ST swaybars, and a set
of Nylon bushings. And to stop on dime, a set of 14.1”
MKIV Brembo Gran Turismo kit was custom fitted.
Electronics
Controlling just about everything in the electronic aspect
of this Supra is a MoTeC M820 ECU. All parameters are logged
and monitored using a MoTeC DASH LOGGER. With Aquamist H20
injection triggered by the ECU, detonation is almost impossible.
Boost pressure is also controlled by the MoTeC ECU via GM
boost solenoid valve, using a Speed and RPM or Gear position
based boost table. With all kinds of compensations using
all the sensors within the system, the 7M is sure to run
smooth and efficient all the time. Ignition is fully sequential
using six individual MKIV twin turbo coil-on-plug setup.
The coils are fired by a GM 6-channel igniter.
Interior
For comfort and performance, I decided to go with a pair
of Recaro SRD seats. A MoTec dash logger now covers the
stock tachometer and speedometer. A Sparco steering wheel
along with few trick toggle switches for lower RPM limit,
speed limit and traction control finish up the simple yet
functional interior of the car.
Exterior
I’m still happy with the factory Black paint. This
car will never be painted with any color but Black. Wheels
were replaced Kinesis K58Rs. Rears are 18 X 10 and
fronts are 18 X 9. These are wrapped with Bridgestone SO3s,
285 30 18 rears and 265 35 18 fronts.
Writeup
I learned a lot of things while working on this car. All
the parts, custom made or not are all what I pictured them
to be. It took a lot of planning and dreaming to get it
to where it is now. I had one goal and I stuck to it. It
is now “almost” done and I’m just beginning
to really enjoy owning and driving it. It will definitely
be in my possession for as long as I’m able to drive.
Future
plans
An OS Giken gear set will definitely be in the future if
I ever find one. A custom TIG welded Roll Cage is in the
plan along with a full set of tubular chromoly control arms.
Maybe a custom tubular rear subframe that will be ligther
yet stronger than the stock one. A very subtle body kit
made from carbon fiber might be in the near future.
