Background
I bought my Supra over 9 years ago and still love it! I'm
just afraid to count how much money and aggravation this
car has cost me…
Turbo
It’s my third turbo, after the head gasket failure
(HKS 1MM) and major engine and other mechanical work, I
decide to use a TURBONETICS T66 with external HKS wastgate
instead of my old Hybrid 60/1 (which was actually very responsive
and reliable).
Bottom
End
JE pistons +.020, JE pistons rings, GREDDY metal head gasket
2.0 mm, CLEV main bearing set, trust washer set and connection
rod bearing.
Head
Polished with ARP bolts.
Intake
Stock manifold with special adapter for the T- 66 turbo
and HKS external wastgate. HKS SSQ Blow off valve and custom
front mount intercooler (APEX GTR core with 2 ¾ upper
piping, custom end tanks). I think it’s the biggest intercooler that its possible to stick under the 7M hood, I still had to move the overflow bottle.
Exhaust
HKS external wastgate, HKS downpipe, and GREDDY SP catback
exhaust. No cats, just a straight pipe.
Fuel
550 Denso injectors, SX big external pump, fuel pressure
regulator.
Drivetrain
Stock 5 speed manual transmission (Red Line oil MTL, make
a big difference). It is my second pressure plate and third
disk. I now have an RPS pressure plate and 6 puck disk,
un-sprung. Recently, after many hours of doubting I decide
to put FIDANZA flywheel and so far I like it. Quick revs
and sweet downshift, but I haven't driven with it long enough
yet, lets see what happens.
Suspension
TOKICO ILUMINNA II adjustable struts with TOKICO sport springs
(1.75 drop). I've had this setup for about 4 years and despite
what other people complain about TOKICO quality, I really
like them. SUSPENSION TECHNIQUES front and rear sway bar,
GREDDY front strut bar.
Electronics
I am using GREDDY PROFEC B boost controller, HKS VPC, APEX
AFC II, HKS Turbo Timer.
Interior
MOMO Fighter steering wheel and MOMO shifter knob. DEFI
boost gauge on left pillar, and GREDDY EGT, HKS boost gauge,
AFR on the fiberglass panel under the radio.
KENWOOD
CD/Radio, 6 CD changer in the trunk, FOKALL speakers (good
upgrade for a MK3).
Exterior
17X8 BORBET wheels with TOYO TS-1. 235/45/17 on the front
and 245/40/17 on the back (it was a mistake, should have
kept 45 profile for the rear tires).
Writeup
I've always been in love with cars and most of it goes out
to the quick, powerful cars. About 10 years ago I was driving
my Chevy Monte Carlo SS on the Belt Parkway, Brooklyn, NY,
looking for some one to race and I found a guy driving MK3
Supra. That time I never even pay attention to the Supra,
since I liked the 3000GT VR-4 (I am so happy, that I never
get one). My Monte was pretty quick and loud, I went to
pass this guy, gave him a look and then just moved in his
lane in front of him continue to drive fast. It was at night
and when I was like 200 ft away from the guy, I think he
decide to kick my butt. From that moment on, I would never
forget. The MK3's hungry face with all lights on, including
fog's, was catching up on me fast. When guy passed me (easily),
I caught myself smiling. I wasn’t mad at all, I just
know, I wanted a car like this!
Looking
through the local newspapers for about a month, I finally
found a guy in Long Island who had exactly the car I wanted.
Burgundy 7M-GTE with stick shift and 91,000 miles on it
for 6 grand. Now I can't say that this car was in the perfect
condition. I learned later that the car was in a huge accident
and a piece from another car was welding it in. The engine
was burning oil, the right front wheel was making some ugly
noises, and when I accelerated fast, I a heard loud shaking
from engine compartment. When I start the car on the morning
I always heard a waterfall behind my dashboard, etc.
Today,
I have no problems distinguishing all of these, but then
again it cost me thousands of dollars, weeks of my time,
disappointment in mechanics I use, and aggravations to find
out what each problem is and how to fix it. I'll give you
one example:
It
was an unpleasant noise from the front passengers side of
my car, some where around the wheel. I went to one guy from
RS Strauss, he checked my car and confidently said, that
I need to change the rack and pinion. Another mechanic told
me that I needed to change my struts. To make a long story
short, I will end this particular example and tell you that
I went to the Toyota dealer and after paying a huge amount
of money, they change my left front bearing for the wheel.
At the end the guy was becoming very friendly and told me
that this car is too old and is going to cost me a lot of
money to fix and keep up, so he suggested I let my Supra
go. It was 8 years ago and my Supra's still kicking like
never before with over 500 hp to the rear wheel.
Future plans
Hopefully I am at the point where I don’t want more
power, I get no traction even with 500+ HP. Looking to get
a good paint job and finally enjoy the car for a long time.
